And, that manager having impressed the right people, has moved on, without a second thought to the people affected by this little chess move: Specifically the people *working* on the game (We, as fans-slash-paying customers, are valid too, but less so 'cause our jobs aren't at stake). I tell ya what I think it is: Some new manager put in charge of the budget and eager to score points decided to buy up all the intellectual properties they could, with the expectation of being able to brag "Well, VALVE owns several dozen IPs in development, what have YOU got? " I don't think there was ever any plan, let alone intention, to actually follow through on DOING that development, it was purely for the bragging. ![]() Would it be so hard for them to actually SAY so, though? Stringing us along like this is doing worse for their reputation as a games company than just coming out and admitting that they're moving on from a project they considered to be a non-starter from the beginning.
